Drawing from life is the perfect situation. Drawing from photographs is a big compromise. Drawing from the television screen is someplace in between and a good challenge. Your brain has to translate, scale and simplify quickly for success. I pause for 5 minutes at a time, and take between ten and fifteen minutes to do these sketches. Since I am hoping to do some life drawing soon, this practice is getting me prepared to describe figures quickly and economically.

My goal is to create a sense of light in these sketches, a sense of ambiance. The beauty and grandeur of this production provides many opportunities to capture interesting incidents of light and shadow using a PENTEL POCKET BRUSH PEN! I rather like the fact that this tool compliments the subject, because these sketches have a retro feel given the technique.
