Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.
Carrying a sketchbook daily for observational work makes me notice things. This week I had very little time so I brought along a toned paper journal. Toned paper can build a sketch quickly because the middle value is already present in the paper and then the only task is to place low lights and highlights as quickly as possible.
Sketching is a kind of reflective “ seeing” and the more sketching one does, the better one sees. I did not see the fire ant hill because I was looking at the tower for about ten minutes…and took away a life lesson: before you look up, look DOWN!
