I like to do quick sketches when I watch MADMEN, particularly the moments when people are moving through anonymous work spaces. A few hits of the pause button and the race to capture a sense of light begins. I prefer to draw from life, but at the end of the day it is really more engaging to try to create an impression of a fleeting image.
The PITT OIL BASE PENCIL resists smudging, resists water, and has several degrees of hardness. For a subtle black line, it is pretty fabulous. For speed, it flies across the paper and builds shadow rather quickly.
DERWENT DRAWING PENCIL in Ivory Black is another product I use frequently for buttery darks and subtle line work. It works more like a crayon and delivers a matte finish that is particularly nice in mixed media work.
