Trying to make 10 minutes worth an hour.
The other sketches in my regular sketchbook are helping me to see simply. Or more simply, faster.

Knowing where to place a mark and the appropriate quality of that mark is a persistent challenge.

Looking at JOHN SINGER SARGENT’S WATERCOLORS and seeing a whole world of abstract possibility in a recognizable form…

Artistically I am still a child with a whole life ahead
of me to discover and create. I want something, but I won’t know
what it is until I succeed in doing it.

It’s a moment that I’m after, a fleeting moment,
but not a frozen moment.

Splash Pads are a great place to practice gesture drawing, because the activity is so frenetic there is no time to get fussy about perfect contour drawing. The human drama is also compelling: seeing people engage in a group activity even though most are strangers at first.

Tentative splashers hang back and observe. Those with brio go berserk roaring like monsters. There is the silent spoiler, who jams the jet with a bucket or foot. The malcontent screams to get wet and then screams to get dry.

July in the South is HOT.

Sitting in the shade near a splash pad will guarantee a cooler location for an urban sketcher! You can find one in the local park or in the middle of an upscale shopping mall, just a step away from STARBUCKS.

I have taught my students not to apply rules
or mechanical ways of seeing.
JOSEPH ALBERS

Back drawing the figure regularly after a hiatus of more than a decade.

Clocked a lot of time in dark studios in the past, mostly in New York: Spring Street Studio ( a.k.a. Minerva’s group ), SVA, PARSONS, ART STUDENTS LEAGUE, … the list goes on and on.

Back then, I was using CONTE CRAYON, pencil, or charcoal. Now I am using ink. If the drawing is not truthful in the first few meaningful strokes, all the erasure in the world probably won’t help. Ink keeps you honest. Ink forces you to be AWAKE: every moment, every stroke.

THE FINALE: INTERNATIONAL FAKE JOURNAL MONTH

April 29, 2014

Roz Stendahl invented INTERNATIONAL FAKE JOURNAL MONTH,  an activity which encourages participants to engage in visual journal work as someone other than oneself. Lots of information can be found here: INTERNATIONAL FAKE JOURNAL BLOG.

This month I explored imagery in panels using this year’s theme : ” NO EXPLANATIONS “.

I am no good at dating things.
Some days I did only one panel, other days I could do a page if the idea was clear.
My character drew her dreams, her family history, band posters, and ads for a local diner.

BELOW YOU CAN SEE THE RESULTS! In keeping with the theme, I’m leaving the explanations to a minimum.

INTERNATIONAL FAKE JOURNAL MONTH: NO EXPLANATIONS…

April 6, 2014

Roz Stendahl invented INTERNATIONAL FAKE JOURNAL MONTH,  an activity which encourages participants to engage in visual journal work as someone other than oneself. Lots of information can be found here: INTERNATIONAL FAKE JOURNAL BLOG.

Last year I participated and my initial choices entailed too much work. You can see the my 2013 FAKE JOURNAL HERE.

The theme for 2014 is NO EXPLANATIONS.

I am keeping things very simple:

• The style is one I can do quickly, and is much more graphic than I would use in my regular journal.

• The tools are simply india inks and Pro-White.

• I am working in panels because this is an approach that is foreign to me for the most part. My journals are usually just collections of drawings, and can have a very random feeling in style and content.

• The images are stream of consciousness, generated by a character who is in her 20’s and sees the world through the format of a graphic novel. Anything can end up in her visual journal, including her friends, her work, her odd ball dreams, and  her old photos.

• I can accomplish a lot in 30 minutes with a brush and ink.

• I have no idea what will happen from panel to panel. The month will reveal what lies in store.

SEPTEMBER : the time to teach and relearn drawing.

Get a sketchbook and begin again, EVERY DAY.

Since limitation usually fosters better creative results, here are a few of the rules of the road:

• Throw away the eraser

• Draw in 15 minute increments at least 5x a week

• Draw only from life

• 85% of the process relies on blind contour drawing tempered by carefully observed contour drawing

• Abandon expectation and embrace the process

• Realize that on a base level, the skill part of the equation is no different than carpentry: no practice = no progress

• Never draw elements out of spatial context, render complete environments: no floating objects or lone eyeballs.

• EMBRACE THE 3 NECESSITIES: proportion, gestural truth, and meaningful mark-making.

• Do it. Do not think about doing it.
